At least 32 dead as Morbi cable bridge collapses in Gujarat

Thirty-two persons are feared dead and over 100 missing, after a cable suspension bridge collapsed in the Machchhu river in Gujarat's Morbi district on Sunday evening.

According reports, over 500 people were on this over century-old bridge, which was repaired five days ago and reopened for the public to use. The cables are said to have given in due to the weight of the people, throwing the people in the river.

Rescue operations were launched immediately and the injured have been taken to local hospitals. Seeing the gravity of the situation, teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were brought in to carry out the rescue operations. The rescue operations were affected in the initial stages to the lack of proper lighting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Gujarat ahead of Assembly elections, spoke to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other officials regarding the mishap.
