Three workers die of toxic gas from septic tank

Three persons, including a minor, died of inhaling toxic fumes emitted from a septic tank on Sunday.

The victims, Nandu, 18, his elder brother Mohit, 24 and their neighbour Sahil, 16 died on Sunday in the Bithoor area of Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, while removing the shutters of an unused septic tank and were exposed to poisonous gases.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Vijay Dhull stated that the three lived in the Chaubepur area of Kanpur district. Nandu and Mohit used to attend to shuttering work of septic tanks, while Sahil was their labourer.

The three attended to a septic tank, built a few months ago. They removed the shuttering of the tank. Sahil entered the tank and suddenly fell unconscious. While Nandu and Mohit tried to rescue him, they also fainted, the DCP said.

The fainted men were then taken to the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital by the firefighters, who broke open the tank to rescue the men, but by the time they reached the hospital, all three were already dead.

Dhull mentioned that a case may be registered in this matter if the victims' families wish to file a complaint.
