Assam CM flayed for demolitions

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma has come in for flak from various political parties for the demolition of houses of 800 families in Assam. Sarma tweeted details of the demolition last evening.

Sarma tweeted, “On June 7, I had inspected riverine areas encroached by illegal settlers near Dholpur Shiva Mandir. I had assured temple management and local people to set up a Manikut, build a guest house & boundary wall. Today's eviction is aimed at starting community farming by removing encroachment.”

He followed it with, “Continuing our drive against illegal encroachments, I am happy and compliment district administration of Darrang and Assam Police for having cleared about 4500 bigha, by evicting 800 households, demolishing 4 illegal religious structures and a private instn at Sipajhar, Darrang.”

Almost all the 800 houses demolished belong to Bengali speaking Muslims, according to reports.

Assam unit of Indian National Congress condemned the demolition of the houses, without any rehabilitation plans.

Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) tweeted, “1000s of poor Bengali-descent Muslims - are being violently evicted from their land and homes in Assam, as part of the communal, genocidal and xenophobic policy of the BJP State Government. This is illegal eviction not "illegal encroachment" - stop it now.”

While some Twitters condemned the action, terming it as violation of Human Rights, there are several tweets with hate messages.
