Arrogant Tripura CM Deb exhibits his contempt for the judiciary

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb has directed civil service officials not to bother about contempt of court, in effect sending the courts for a toss.

In his address to the 26th biennial conference of Tripura Civil Service Officers Association (TCSOA) on Saturday, Deb, of the Bharatiya Janata Party said he does not like officials telling him that taking of certain decisions by the government would invite contempt orders from the courts.

He described himself as a tiger stating, “I am a tiger, not a court. We make laws and the court just implements them.”

With arrogance of power, the Chief Minister said that the court will direct the police (to arrest the official guilty of contempt of court), police will say we are looking for him, not getting. So, don’t be afraid of court etc.” (sic)

He said that people say that they can’t take risks because that may be contempt of court order. “I want to know who has been sent to jail on contempt of court charges. I am here, before you go, I will go to the court first. What kind of problem will this create in the system?” Deb questioned. He said that it is not easy to jail someone in contempt of court cases, because that needs police, and the police are under the control of the government, not courts.

Deb said, “The person who runs the government (Chief Minister) gets the ultimate power, public decides the government, the government is not decided by the court, the court is for the people, not the other way round.

Stating that the government is supreme, he directed the officials to listen to the elected representatives and execute the projects and schemes without fearing rule, laws and courts.
