Maharashtra BJP protests to demand opening of temples

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and activists in Maharashtra carried out demonstrations in various parts of the state demanding that temples be opened for the public. The temples were ordered to be closed due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

The party carried out a shankhanad (blowing of the conch) outside temples in the state. Majority of the men and women participating in the protest did not follow COVID 19 protocol like wearing of masks and keeping safe distance from others.

The BJP blamed the Mahavikas Aghadi government in the state for not allowing the opening of temples. Yesterday, social activist Anna Hazare expressed his support to the demand for the opening of temples.

BJP legislator from Mumbai Ram Kadam, tried to give the government decision a communal colour stating that permission was being given to other religions, but only Hindu temples were not being allowed to be opened.

The Union Health Ministry has written to the State Chief Secretary to ensure that proper steps are taken to avoid crowds during the ensuing festivals, so as to prevent the spread of COVID 19.

In the light of this, the Congress, which is a partner in the ruling alliance questioned the double standard of the BJP, with the Centre seeking restrictions and the state BJP demanding opening of temples.
