Chennai civic school head prepares roll call on caste basis; transferred
The headmistress of a civic primary school in Chennai, who had prepared students’ attendance register on caste basis, has been transferred according to official sources.
Following media reports that the headmistress had prepared the attendance register of students on the basis of castes, in a primary school run by the Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation, the civic authorities took action against the teacher and also issued orders yesterday, to all the schools under it to ensure that attendance register is prepared only in alphabetical order of the students’ names.
The schools have been instructed that should it be necessary to keep a record of the caste of the students for the purpose of scholarship or other schemes, a separate register should be maintained.
The Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation runs 281 primary, middle, high and higher secondary schools.
