Reporting of crime against women up in Haryana

The Women Helpline, available on 1901, of Haryana police has instilled confidence in women, with over 77,000 calls on the number in 2021, according to state Director General of Police P K Agarwal.

Agarwal told journalists at press conference yesterday that of the 77,000 complaints on the helpline number, 1872 were converted to first information report (FIR). The Haryana police has also created an app for lodging complaints of crime against women. Based on the complaints received on the app, the police lodged 48 FIRs, took preventive action in 34 cases and 1,583 matters were resolved amicably.

According to Agarwal, well-trained women police personnel handle the calls on the helpline, to ensure the safety and security of the women and at the same time instilling confidence and courage among working women, as well as home makers.

The police are also trying to sensitise women to come forward to report crimes against them. “Women used to hesitate in reporting crimes against them, but with increased awareness and the initiatives taken by the state police, the reporting of such crimes has increased,” Agarwal stated.

The state police have launched various social awareness initiatives, including its exemplary one month-long “Jagriti Yatra” cycle expedition, in which a team of 16 police women cyclists covered a distance of 1,400 km covering 23 police districts across the state.
