Plan to construct shelter home for destitute women in North Bengal
Destitute women in and around Siliguri in West Bengal will soon have a shelter home. This has been proposed by West Bengal Commission for Women Chairperson Leena Gangopadhyay, after she travelled in North Bengal over the past few days.
Gangopadhyay inspected three proposed sites for the shelter home for destitute women, aged above 18 years. Two of these sites are in Siliguri (Darjeeling District) in Panjabipara and Burdwan Road; the third site is in Rajgan block of the neighbouring Jalpaiguri.
The chairperson announced on Wednesday that she will soon submit a proposal to the Department of Women and Child Welfare, for the construction of the shelter home. She added, that the department will follow it up, by sending an inspection team to the sites. The sites were identified by Amit Sarkar, President of Darjeeling District Legal Aid Forum, according to her.
