Gujarat HC notice to police on flogging of Muslim youth

The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to policemen and the state government for the public flogging of Muslim youth in Kheda district for allegedly pelting stones at a Navratri venue.

It was brought to the notice of the court that plainclothes police had flogged half a dozen Muslim men in village Undhela on October 4, to the cheering by people around them.

The culprit police personnel had video recorded the flogging and had posted it on social media. The video soon went viral.

The police action was justified a few days later by state Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, who is said to have questioned the human rights of those who pelt with stones.

The notices to the police were issued by a division Bench comprising Chief Justice Aravind Kumar and Justice A J Shastri.
