Khap Panchayats to promote education

Khap Panchayats of Haryana, known to take a strong stand in favour of discriminatory social-customs, has now decided to give importance to education. Several Khap Panchayats have demanded better educational facilities and have decided to launch campaigns to increase enrolment of students in government schools in the state.

Some of these bodies have formed teams of volunteers to carry out inspection of government schools to ensure that they have adequate facilities for students and teachers. The volunteers will also go door-to-door to impress upon the people to enrol their children in government schools. The move is because the community members feel that private schools are fleecing the public, by charging high fees. They also feel that government school teachers are better qualified.

The teams would initially be active in 50 villages of Bhiwani and Hisar districts of Haryana.
