Parents wait for six days to get son’s body

Seenu’s parents had to wait for six  days to take charge of his body and perform the final rites.

Seenu, an SC boy from Class 7 said to have committed suicide on October 14 in Ariyanay agipuram near Sendamaram, Tamil Nadu. It was alleged that his school teachers made casteist comments against him. 

The parents had refused to take charge of the mortal remains of their son, until there was a probe and re-postmortem, following which the parents approached the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court demanding a re-postmortem and transfer of the case to CB-CID (Crime Branch-Crime Investigation Department).

However, the court refused the re-postmortem, but told the parents to take charge of the body.

State School Education Department and police had denied the allegation of castesist comments by teachers, after an inquiry.

Meanwhile, members of the Dalit liberty Movement staged a demonstration outside the district collectorate on Thursday condemning the casteist comments by the teachers leading to Seenu’s suicide. Leaders of the movement have appealed, “Teachers should take oath everyday against caste discrimination and caste names must be removed from all the school name boards. In the last one and half month, three SC students, including Seenu died by suicide. Strict action should be taken against the teachers, and the case should be transferred to the CB-CID for further inquiry."
