Nine SC judges sworn in

Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of office this morning to nine new judges of the apex court of India.

The judges sworn are Justices Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Hima Kohli, B V Nagarathna, C T Ravikumar, M M Sundresh, Bela Trivedi and P S Narsimha.

The Supreme Court had ten vacancies and on August 17, the collegium recommended the names of nine judges for appointment to the highest court in the country. The government gave an approval to the names on August 26.

With the swearing in of these nine judges, the strength of the judges in the Supreme Court has gone to 33 of the sanctioned strength of 34.

This is the first time in the history of the Supreme Court that nine judges were sworn in at one time. Of the nine judges, three are women, these being Justices Hima Kohli, B V Nagarathna and Bela Trivedi. With this, there are now four women judges in the Supreme Court.
