BJP failed to keep promises: Manik Sarkar

Communist Party of India (Marxist) Politburo member and former Chief Minister of Tripura Manik Sarkar lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for failure to fulfil promises made during the elections to the Tripura legislative assembly.

Sarkar was addressing members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Tripura Youth Federation (TYF) after they marched in Agratala in support of their 10 demands including employment for youth, increase in wages of work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and ‘restoration of democracy’.

Sarkar told the gathering, “People have started rejecting the BJP. The BJP leaders are fearing to show their faces among people. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should come here to witness the situation as he played a very crucial role in bringing this party to power. People have not forgotten the BJP's manifesto in the name of a vision document that has been designed in such a way that the people, precisely youth, can be lured towards the BJP. But, after coming to power, they have forgotten everything.”

He added that the BJP had promised during the election campaign that on coming to power in the state, it will increase the human days for work under MGNERGA. He said that that this promise has remained on paper and the MGNERGA job card holders have been struggling even to get 50 days of work in a year. He flayed the BJP led government for failing to increase the wages under MGNREGA from the present Rs 340 per day.
