Women, backward class and minority candidates dominate

YSR Congress candidate list

A record 78 per cent of the candidates for the posts of mayors and chairpersons of civic bodies, fielded by YSR Congress Party in Andhra Pradesh, are women, and members of backward classes (BC) and minority communities, according to the party’s official announcement.

Of the 86 posts of mayors and chairpersons for which candidates have been put up by the party. 40 are from backward classes, 12 from minorities and 52 are women.

An official communique stated that the backward classes have been given priority by the party in the state and this is more than the posts given to these communities, where these communities are in larger numbers.

“Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has made it clear that people who are the majority in number from a community, should be represented in the forefront to look after the welfare of their people. Unlike in TDP government, which used BCs like a vote bank, the Chief Minister had given recognition to weaker sections and implemented his saying that BC are the backbone class in reality,” according to the party.

The party has accused Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders of atrocities to lure the opposition candidates to join TDP.

“YSRCP doesn’t entertain such irregularities or misuse of power, and will always abide by the public mandate. We received a landslide victory in recent local body polls due to the good governance of Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, who redefined the welfare and development by taking governance to the grass-root level. It is the Chief Minister’s idea to keep governance within people’s reach, right at their doorstep for effective implementation of welfare schemes,” the party claimed.
