Women centric films dominate Kerala film awards
Women centric films have dominated the Kerala film awards, announced yesterday, with The Great Indian Kitchen bagging the Best Film at the 51st Kerala State Film Awards.
The film portrays a woman’s fight against patriarchal system. It also won the best screenplay award, which went to Jeo Baby, who also directed the film.
The second best movie was Thinkalazhcha Nischayam, a film that advocate’s women’s right to self-determination on various issues.
Suhasini, the chairperson of the jury told mediapersons that the decision to declare The Great Indian Kitchen as the Best Film was unanimous.
Jayasurya, who performed the role of a man, who successfully battled alcoholism in Vellam, was named the Best Actor (Male). Anna Ben, who portrayed with attention to minute details the travails of a woman in adverse situations in Kappela, was adjudged the Best Actor (Female).
Sreerekha was adjudged the Best Character Actor (Female) for her role in Veyil, while Sudheesh won the Best Character Actor (Male) for his role in Ennivar and Bhoomiyele Manohara Swarkayam.
The jury also recognised three other women—Siji Pradeep won a special award for her role in Bharathapuzha; Nachiyamma, a tribal woman, who rendered the popular song in Ayyappanum Koshiyum bagged the special award for transpersons or women, while Nalini Jameela got a special mention for costume design in Bharatpuzha.
