Private transport strike a success in Assam

The chakka bandh agitation by the private transport workers of Assam went of successfully yesterday, with most of the private transport coming to a halt for 24 hours, starting January 27.

The call for the strike was given by prominent trade unions in Assam, in support of various demands, the primary demand being the implementation of welfare scheme for private transport workers. The scheme has been proposed by the Assam Government, but has remained on paper.

Apex Court stays Bombay HC Acquittal in sexual assault case in the absence of skin-to-skin contact

The Supreme Court has stayed the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench order which said that a person groping a girl child’s breast without skin-to-skin contact cannot be held guilty of sexual assault under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act. The Bombay High Court’s verdict by Justice Pushpa Ganediwala has been challenged by Youth Bar Association of India.

Duo issue apology after denying Dalits entry to temple

After denying entry to a Dalit family, two upper-caste Hindus issued an apology after the police intervention. A complaint was registered earlier in Coimbatore’s Thudiyalur police station by R Kamatchi of NGGO Colony alleging caste discrimination.

The woman stated that she was not allowed to enter the temple in Balaji Nagar along with her son and his family on January 25. As per the complaint, she was refused entry by a man and woman because she was a Dalit. Kamatchi informed that her family had to offer prayer while standing outside the temple.

Proposal to create 18 lakh jobs for 12 pass youth in the country

Eighteen lakh enterprises, run by 12 class passed can be created in the country to service 60 million micro and small enterprises (MSEs), according to a report submitted to the Central Government jointly by Azim Premji University, Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
